A Little More About Me

Hi! Welcome to my blog! I’m Kate, a 30-something Midwesterner by way of New England. I lived in Connecticut until 2001, moved to Chicago and now live way the hell out in the northwest suburbs.  Trying to tell people about yourself is never objective and somehow you can just never capture everything. Nonetheless, here are some things I think you might want to know (and please, if you want to know more, just ask!):

*The name of this blog is a reference to one of my favorite movies ever, “Heathers.” I had a fierce crush on Christian Slater for years when I was younger and, when we had all the pay channels illegally in high school, I used to wake up at all hours of the night to watch that movie.

*I’m married to an awesome man who is a sound engineer by trade. Which means now neither of us has any interest in seeing shows of any kind, unless a friend’s band is playing. Occupational hazard and all that.

*My blog header is a picture I took on the lake in Chicago sometime in July 2010.

*I’m so thrilled we moved to the ‘burbs. In all honesty, where we live doesn’t feel like a suburb. It feels like the country, except it only takes a few minutes and a couple miles to get to any store I want to go to. We’re surrounded by trees and grass and water and I’m not sure I could be much happier. That we live in frigid temps for several months out of the year only makes me appreciate it more, though I can’t deny I bitch about the cold regularly throughout the entire months of January and February.

*I consider myself agnostic, but the older I get, the more I’m beginning to think my agnosticism grew out of an aversion to organized religion. Whether a higher power exists or not, I’m on this planet to dole out as much love as possible and hopefully get some in return.

*In high school I was voted Class Pessimist (along with three other people). I don’t view myself as a pessimist, but rather a realist. Sometimes it’s a fine line.

*If I never had to work again and money was no object, I’d grab my husband and start traveling around the world. We’d buy a boat, eat as much spicy food as possible, and spend our days snorkeling and scuba diving.

*I have a massive television addiction. I’m a sucker for a lot of reality TV because I find humans fascinating, whether the shows are scripted or not.

*Cooking and baking are major passions of mine. I’ve been trying to cut down on my baking — since I just want to all of the end results — but you’ll find a variety of recipes here.

*My family is spread out all over the place (Connecticut, Tennessee, Maine, Colorado, Mississippi, Florida …). This works out in my favor since I get to take some pretty cool trips to see the people I love. A bonus is that my husband’s mom and stepdad — whom I love fiercely — are not too far away in Wisconsin.

*I used to be a voracious reader and then I’m not sure what happened. I’m slowly trying to get back on that train.

*Since college, I’ve had some pretty varied work experiences. I’ve written for newspapers and magazines, done PR, been an admin, worked as a product manager for a software company, gotten my paralegal certification and worked for a law office. Currently I’m an editor for a magazine publisher and I’m really happy.

*I’m unsure about having kids. I really love them and sometimes my husband and I think we want them, but then we change our minds. Looks like we’ll be leaving that one up to destiny.

I was surfing through tags and stumbled across your blog. (My older daughter is named Heather, and is your age.)

Your theme about “Couch to 5K” resonated with me because I’m also trying to kick the couching, lest I kick the bucket. I had a quad bypass two years ago, and my surgeon told me that I only have a 50-50 chance of not needing another one in 8 more years.

Last Saturday, I ran my first 10K. It was called “Lawyers Have a Heart”, held in Georgetown, D.C. Like the struggle you’ve described, it’s been the steepest metaphorical mountain that I’ve ever climbed to get to the point of just being able to run 10K (87+ min). Never mind that a BUNCH of 77 year old ladies kicked my butt around the course.

That is so awesome, Don! Way to go! Let’s hope we’re still running around when we’re 77! :)

Nbr. 8 on your movie quiz is Morgan Freeman, in “Lean on Me” (or is it “Stand by Me”?) I love it when the clueless white guy has to lean over to his black coworker and wisper, “HNIC?”

It’s from Lean on Me. And I love that part, too. :)

  3. “…I’m on this earth to dole out as much love…”
    SO TRUE!
Stumbled upon your site– I’ll be back often :)

    Yay! Thanks for visiting!

What an excellent attitude toward life to take. Being a non-believer gets a really bad rap, especially in the US, but I often wonder if athiests/agnostics aren’t naturally inclined to be more loving and generous than religious subscribers. Athiests/agnostics are accountable only to themselves, if they’re kind and decent it is because they think it’s right and not out of fear or because they’re following directions, with no assured chance of redemption beyond this lifetime one wants to do one’s best in life, and without the perfect love of some God we have to find love within one another.
